MRCP PACES Courses Experts Interview: Prof. Jaspal Kooner of Ealing PACES

As we mentioned in a recent post, we are conducting interviews with the experts behind some of our country’s best MRCP PACES courses. In this, our first such interview, we speak with Ealing PACES’ Professor Jaspal Kooner.

Professor Kooner is a Professor of Clinical Cardiology at Imperial College, works as a Consultant Cardiologist at Hammersmith Hospital, and also a Consultant Physician and Cardiologist at Ealing Hospital.

Professor Kooner is renowned as one of the leading physicians in the UK and is actively engaged in research, teaching and clinical activities in London. In 2004, Professor Kooner was named “Hospital Doctor of the Year” at the prestigious Hospital Doctor Awards. He has more than twenty years experience in postgraduate and undergraduate teaching. How long has the Ealing PACES course been running now?

21 years.

 

What’s your role in the course?

Course Director.

 

How has the course changed over the years?

Course has changed over the years to ensure that teaching always reflects the changes in PACES exam structure and is tailored to passing the exam.

 

What’s the one thing that MRCP PACES candidates tend to have most trouble with?

Distilling physical signs in a coherent manner to a diagnosis or differential.

 

What’s your top piece of advice for someone preparing for the MRCP PACES exam?

Do Ealing PACES! the importance of learning in groups and form expert teachers can not ever be underestimated.

 

Do you have any funny stories from running the course?

Yes – a candidate insisted in registering on Monday 9.00am, for the preceding weekend course!
